Dave Bautista has officially revealed that he has packed on 20 pounds of pure muscle in preparation for his upcoming role as Kratos in Prime Video’s highly anticipated live-action adaptation of the God of War video game franchise.
The Guardians of the Galaxy star officially stepped into the iconic role back in August, replacing original casting choice Ryan Hurst. Hurst had been deeply involved in early preparations and filming before suffering a severe bicep tear during the execution of a demanding stunt for the series. Due to the extensive length of time required for surgery and recovery, Hurst was forced to step away from the production entirely, opening the door for Bautista to take up the mantle of the Ghost of Sparta.
Following the announcement of his casting, Bautista wasted no time diving into a rigorous physical conditioning regimen. In early September, the actor shared a video update on his personal Instagram account, showcasing his improving physique while flexing for the camera. At the time, he noted that he had only been heavily weight training for a period of three weeks, but stated that he still had roughly two months of dedicated preparation remaining to "get where he needs to be" to physically embody the legendary God of War.

Now, it appears that those crucial two months of intense training and specialized nutrition have drawn to a close. Bautista took to his Instagram story to provide fans with another physical update, sharing a photo of himself wearing a God of War t-shirt accompanied by the text "Gained 20 lbs for GOW." The post also featured a sticker reading "250," indicating that the actor and former professional wrestler has successfully climbed to a weight of 250 pounds as production schedules move forward. The update quickly circulated across social media platforms, drawing widespread attention from entertainment and gaming outlets alike.
The transformation represents a major physical shift for Bautista in recent years. During his illustrious WWE wrestling career, where he performed as Batista, the towering athlete maintained an average operating weight of roughly 290 pounds. However, following his transition into a full-time Hollywood acting career, Bautista made a conscious decision to shed a significant amount of his massive muscle mass. He pursued this dramatic slim-down in order to open himself up to a much more diverse array of acting roles, citing a desire to step away from strictly musclebound characters and improve his overall comfort and mobility both on and off camera.
This noticeable reduction in size, while beneficial for his dramatic acting pursuits, did not go unnoticed by the internet. When Bautista’s involvement in the Prime Video adaptation was first confirmed, a vocal segment of God of War fans openly questioned whether he still possessed the imposing, larger-than-life physical frame required to convincingly portray the brutal, musclebound Spartan warrior on screen. However, this latest update from a visibly bulked-up Bautista has comprehensively quieted those critics, demonstrating his absolute dedication to physically capturing the intimidating stature of Kratos.
Prime Video’s upcoming God of War television series is set to adapt the rich narrative era established in the critically acclaimed PlayStation franchise’s Norse mythology chapters. The storyline will chronicle the complex relationship between Kratos, played by Bautista, and his young son Atreus, portrayed by Callum Vinson. Together, the father and son duo will embark on a deeply emotional and perilous journey across the realms to fulfill the final wishes of Faye, Kratos’s late wife and Atreus’s mother, by scattering her ashes at the highest peak across all nine realms. Recognizing the massive scale of the source material and the depth of the narrative arc, Amazon Studios has already expressed immense confidence in the project by placing an early two-season order for the series.
