Magic: The Gathering Returns to Marvel with Darkhold Destiny

Magic: The Gathering and Marvel are continuing their high-profile partnership with a third upcoming crossover set, following previous releases like the Spider-Man and Marvel Super Heroes sets last year. However, this upcoming expansion is taking a distinctly different path. Rather than grounding its characters in a fairly mundane version of New York City, the new set—titled Darkhold Destiny—embraces the supernatural side of the Marvel Universe, bringing the likes of Doctor Strange and the Asgardians into a much more magical narrative.

What truly separates this new, out-there expansion from the previous Marvel crossovers is the level of creative freedom granted to Wizards of the Coast. For Darkhold Destiny, the development team was able to write its own original story utilizing Marvel’s iconic characters and settings. This approach makes the crossover feel less like a temporary promotional tie-in and much more like a natural, integrated part of Magic’s sprawling multiverse.

By building an in-house story, Wizards of the Coast was also able to give its artists significantly more license to craft unique visual interpretations of well-known Marvel heroes and villains. For instance, in the previous Marvel Super Heroes set, the Scarlet Witch featured a fairly standard appearance closely mirroring her classic comic book design. In contrast, the art developed for Darkhold Destiny reimagines her to fit the distinct aesthetic of a Magic: The Gathering character, while still retaining key signature elements of her iconic look, such as her traditional mask.

According to early details regarding the plot, the overarching narrative centers around a massive cosmic and magical crisis. Dormammu and Hela harness the power of the infamous Darkhold to launch an invasion across the entire multiverse. It ultimately falls to Doctor Strange, Thor, and a host of other Marvel heroes to step forward and stop them. Naturally, because the story revolves heavily around magical artifacts, ancient spellbooks, and powerful arcane entities, the set’s mechanical and thematic focus leans heavily into spellcasting.

For MTG's Next Marvel Set, Wizards Created its Own Superhero Story

Thematically, this spellcasting infrastructure is divided into three distinct conceptual schools of magic: Arcane, Divine, and Dark. Arcane magic is primarily themed around Doctor Strange and his mystical allies, focusing on intellectual mastery and intricate spell manipulation. Divine magic is wielded by the Asgardians and other similar celestial and mythological entities, emphasizing power drawn from higher realms. Meanwhile, Dark magic is predominantly utilized by the villains of the set, such as Dormammu and Hela, though certain anti-hero figures like Ghost Rider will also harness Dark magic to achieve their goals.

From a gameplay perspective, players can expect a strong emphasis on impactful instants, sorceries, and unique enchantments that capture the flavor of a magical war across dimensions. In a notable nod to Magic history, Wizards of the Coast is bringing back the Arcane subtype for instants and sorceries, a mechanic that has remained largely dormant since it was last featured in Saviors of Kamigawa all the way back in 2005. While players might wonder about the return of the obscure "Splice Onto Arcane" ability—which historically allowed players to combine different arcane spells into single casts—Wizards has confirmed that specific mechanic will not be making a comeback in this set.

As with any major contemporary Magic: The Gathering release, Darkhold Destiny will be accompanied by a comprehensive lineup of products tailored for both casual fans and dedicated collectors. The standard lineup will be fully represented, including Booster Packs, Collector Boosters, and Bundles. In addition to these staple offerings, the release will feature four distinct Commander decks, providing ready-to-play options for multiplayer formats right out of the box.

For collectors and enthusiasts looking for premium versions, each of the four Commander decks will also have a corresponding collector’s edition available, completely outfitted with premium foil treatments. Furthermore, the product lineup includes two scene boxes, each containing six mechanically unique cards designed to form a larger, cohesive piece of art when displayed together. Both the standard Bundle and the special Gift Bundle will also include a mechanically unique promo card, keeping alive the tradition of exclusive bundle cards that often generate significant attention and demand within the secondary market.

Wizards of the Coast plans to give fans their very first official glimpse into this original Marvel storyline in February through a special comic book produced in partnership with Image Comics. A second companion comic book will follow closer to the set’s official launch window, which is currently scheduled for April 2027.
