The Indian devotional film “Hanuman Ansh” has emerged as a major international box office success, grossing more than $3.5 million outside its home territory after premiering for global audiences through the powerhouse production and distribution banner Hombale Films. Known globally for backing massive cinematic franchises including “K.G.F” and “Kantara,” Hombale Films has now detailed the strategic rollout that engineered the impressive overseas run for the independent feature.
Written and directed by Vishal Chaturvedi, the film is adapted from his autobiographical and spiritual book, “Divine Detour: That Changed My Life.” The narrative centers on the character of Lakshman Das, a young boy who makes the profound decision to leave his home following the death of his mother. Driven by grief and a deep spiritual yearning, he embarks on a relentless search for the divine. After years of intense wandering, introspection, and meditation, his spiritual journey culminates in his transformation into the revered saint Neem Karoli Baba, widely known to his countless devotees as Maharaj-ji.
The film features a dedicated cast, with Shobhinaw Satyaa stepping into the title role to portray the adult saint. He stars opposite Chandan Anand, while young actor Vihaan Shedge portrays the teenage years of Maharaj-ji. The supporting cast includes veteran actors Anil Rastogi and Purnima Tiwari, adding emotional depth and gravitas to the production. Director Vishal Chaturvedi also served as a producer on the project, collaborating closely with producers Ragini Sona, Namrata G. Singh, and Anupriya A. Nagar under his Swambhu Media Network banner.
The international journey of the film required meticulous planning and a hands-on distribution approach. Hombale Films, which has built a reputation for handling massive domestic and international releases, recognized the universal resonance of the spiritual narrative and decided to take absolute control of the global strategy.
“Our strategy involved taking ownership of all global territories and collaborating with the biggest local partners in each region to ensure the best possible release footprint,” explains Hombale Films producer Chaluve Gowda. “By leveraging the data and learnings from our previous releases like ‘Mahavatar Narsimha,’ we were able to tap into the right locations and cinema chains. This targeted approach has yielded spectacular numbers.”
To execute the global rollout, the Bengaluru-based banner forged strategic alliances with key international distributors. They partnered with Phars Film to handle the Gulf Cooperation Council region and Prathyangara Cinemas to manage North America. The film officially opened to international audiences on September 11, marking a significant milestone and a unique departure for Hombale Films as a company.
“‘Hanuman Ansh’ is the first film outside of our own productions that we have full-fledgedly distributed internationally,” Gowda notes. “We truly believed in this project, as it perfectly aligns with our vision of taking Indian stories global.”
A breakdown of the overseas territory figures reveals that North America served as the primary driver of the international tally, pulling in an impressive $1.8 million across the United States and Canada. Australia and New Zealand followed closely behind as strong markets, contributing a combined $606,716. Meanwhile, the Gulf Cooperation Council region brought in $577,870, and the United Kingdom added another $269,837 to the global box office total.
Smaller yet culturally significant markets also demonstrated steady interest in the devotional drama. Singapore accounted for $61,334, while European territories brought in $41,171. The remainder of the world contributed a substantial $483,006, rounding out the robust international performance that crossed the $3.5 million threshold.
This recent international expansion follows Hombale Films’ prior experience with spiritually themed content, having previously backed the animated feature “Mahavatar Narsimha.” That project went on to achieve massive commercial success, grossing more than INR300 crore, equivalent to approximately $31.3 million, proving the growing global appetite for culturally rooted mythological and spiritual storytelling.
While its international numbers have proven remarkable, the domestic trajectory of “Hanuman Ansh” is an extraordinary sleeper hit story within the Indian film industry. Produced on a modest budget of approximately INR2 crore, which translates to roughly $209,000, the film originally opened quietly in India on August 7 across a limited footprint of roughly 250 screens through Cinépolis India.
However, fueled by powerful word-of-mouth recommendations, audience appreciation, and strong cultural resonance, the film experienced a massive expansion. Screen counts rapidly multiplied to more than 2,000 screens nationwide. Over the course of its seven-week theatrical run, the low-budget independent feature accumulated a staggering INR340.7 crore, amounting to roughly $35.5 million at the domestic box office, far exceeding initial industry expectations.
Buoyed by both domestic and international triumphs, creator Vishal Chaturvedi has structured the narrative with long-term ambitions, planning “Hanuman Ansh” as the inaugural installment of an expansive cinematic trilogy. The unprecedented crossover success from a modest beginning has validated the vision of both the independent creators and their established backers.
“We will always support the makers in bringing their ultimate vision to life,” Gowda concludes, emphasizing the production house’s ongoing commitment to fostering unique cinematic voices. “These are exactly the kinds of stories we want to champion as a production house, and we will continue to back creators who dare to tell such grand stories with all their heart.”
