SINGAPORE — Expanding the boundaries of vertical entertainment, FlareFlow parent COL Group, alongside V47 Entertainment and Virtue Asia, has unveiled a sweeping and ambitious 2027 microdrama slate. Announced on Wednesday in Singapore at an unprecedented industry upfront event titled Inside Microdramas, the lineup is anchored by high-profile Korean adaptations developed in collaboration with the CJ Group, alongside a dynamic batch of fresh original productions.
The unveiling marks a significant milestone for the rapidly growing vertical video sector, showcasing how digital-first platforms are scaling up their production values, narrative scope, and international partnerships. By tapping into popular intellectual property from South Korea while simultaneously cultivating original global concepts, the companies are aiming to solidify their dominant positions in the multi-billion-dollar short-form drama ecosystem.
Korean Adaptations Take Center Stage
The centerpiece of the 2027 slate is a trio of Korean titles developed in strategic partnership with the CJ Group, leveraging the proven global appeal of Korean webtoons and web novels.
Leading the adaptation slate is "Idol Once Again," a high-concept fantasy series that follows a washed-up, disillusioned idol who unexpectedly travels back in time, granting him a second coveted shot at fame, redemption, and musical success. Also adapting a widely read webtoon is "Genius Doctor Lee Mu-jin," which weaves a gripping narrative about a gritty street fighter who finds himself unusually coached and guided by the ghost of a brilliant, highly skilled physician.
Rounding out the Korean lineup is "The Exclusive Secretary," adapted from a popular web novel. The narrative explores the complex, slow-burn dynamic between a wealthy corporate heir and the secretary who lives with him, growing increasingly closer even as a perilous, high-stakes fight over family succession plays out around them. These titles underscore the partners’ intent to bring premium, serialized storytelling with high emotional stakes into the vertical viewing format.
Original Productions and Proven IP Expansion
In addition to the Korean adaptations, COL Group and V47 are heavily investing in a diverse portfolio of original programming designed to captivate international audiences.
Among the most anticipated originals is "The Vanishing Act," a suspenseful mystery centering on a professional magician who inexplicably vanishes live on air during the grand finale of an international talent contest. Another major original is "Fortune Chasers," a genre-bending project that cleverly mixes the high-octane drama of a scripted reality competition with intense thriller beats. Furthermore, the slate features "1% Better," a competitive reality format set against the rugged backdrop of the sports and fitness world, pitting unlikely and contrasting rivals against one another in grueling challenges.
Beyond brand-new content, the companies are doubling down on their proven successes. The 2027 slate carries over three of COL Group’s best-performing existing microdramas—"Oops, I Married My Bestie’s Brother!," "My Sweetheart’s a Gangster," and "From Janitor to Mrs. Billionaire." Rather than leaving these titles as standalone successes, the companies plan to extend their life cycles through wider international distribution, further adaptations, and strategic commercial tie-ups, though the exact forms of these follow-ups remain under wraps for now.
Platform Growth and the Launch of Story Engine
This aggressive content expansion is underpinned by the explosive growth of COL Group’s FlareFlow platform. FlareFlow has successfully surpassed 52 million registered users and boasts a massive catalog of nearly 7,000 short-drama titles, reaching eager viewers in upward of 200 countries and regions worldwide. Demonstrating its commercial clout, the platform notably topped all rights holders in TikTok’s short-drama revenue-share rankings for the first quarter of 2026.
To streamline and supercharge future production and distribution, COL Group, V47 Entertainment, and Virtue Asia used the Singapore event to launch "Story Engine." This innovative operating model tightly integrates development, production, financing, and worldwide distribution into a single cohesive framework.
Story Engine pools the specific strengths of all three partners: V47’s robust development and production arm, Virtue Asia’s deep expertise in cultural strategy and seamless brand integration, and COL Group’s specialized genre know-how and vast international distribution reach. Crucially, the model reimagines how brands participate in entertainment. Instead of relying solely on traditional product placement or passive sponsorships, brands can now come aboard early as development partners, executive producers, or direct financiers, securing a potential stake in the resulting intellectual property.
Timothy Oh, chief marketing officer of FlareFlow and general manager of COL Group International, emphasized the collaborative philosophy driving the new model.
"We see a real opportunity for brands to go beyond traditional advertising and become part of the entertainment audiences actively choose to watch," Oh said during the presentation. "By bringing together our genre expertise and international distribution network with the creative strengths of V47 and Virtue, we’re helping brands develop original entertainment IP that can build lasting audience connections and grow across platforms and markets."
A New Era for Brand Integration and Franchise Building
V47 Entertainment itself was formed through a strategic partnership between Virtue Asia and Goldfinch International, the international expansion vehicle of the U.K.-based Goldfinch Group that targets the Middle East and North Africa, Asia, and Africa.
David Webster, chair of V47 Entertainment, highlighted that the ultimate goal of the initiative is to build enduring franchises rather than isolated hits.
"The opportunity lies in developing entertainment that can grow into something larger than one production," Webster noted. "By bringing brands into the development and financing process, we can give ambitious original ideas the backing they need to reach audiences, while creating opportunities to build franchises and valuable IP over time. The story must always come first, but we’re opening up new ways for brands to become meaningful partners in creating the entertainment people want to watch."
Meanwhile, Virtue Asia—a prominent strategic and creative agency whose blue-chip client roster includes Disney, Google, Spotify, Toyota, Diageo, and Shiseido—stressed the necessity of authentic cultural integration in modern digital video.
Lesley John, CEO of Virtue Asia, argued that contemporary brands can no longer capture consumer attention merely by interrupting culture, but must instead earn a genuine place within it.
"Microdramas offer an exciting opportunity, but success depends on understanding the culture, the audience, and the storytelling that makes people want to keep watching," John explained. "Our role is to bring those worlds together—translating cultural insight into creative integration that feels native to the story and adds value to the audience experience, not just visibility for the brand."
