International stars Olga Kurylenko and Alex Pettyfer have officially signed on to headline the upcoming crime thriller “Breakwater,” a high-stakes Mediterranean project that has been picked up for worldwide sales by WestEnd Films. The feature film, which promises a potent blend of classic noir atmosphere and contemporary suspense, is scheduled to launch its international sales campaign at the upcoming American Film Market (AFM). Production on the movie is slated to kick off in April 2027 against the sun-soaked, picturesque backdrop of Malta.

Kurylenko, whose extensive global action and drama credits include standout roles in “Quantum of Solace,” “Oblivion,” and Marvel’s blockbuster “Black Widow,” will star alongside Pettyfer, widely recognized for his memorable performances in “Magic Mike,” “The Butler,” and Guy Ritchie’s recent action feature “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.” The duo will anchor a narrative centered on desperate choices, high-seas peril, and psychological tension under the direction of filmmaker Luc Walpoth, whose previous directorial work includes “In Tandem” and “Dead Money.”

Set against the blinding beauty of a coastal paradise, “Breakwater” follows the converging fates of two women who are each desperately seeking a way out of their current circumstances. Kurylenko portrays Iris, a woman trapped inside an increasingly suffocating and toxic marriage. Her path crosses in a chance encounter with Daya, a local bartender who is yearning to escape the confines of her dead-end hometown. Finding common ground in their shared desperation, the two women hatch a daring and illicit plan to blackmail Iris’s wealthy, sadistic husband, Avery—played by Pettyfer—while aboard his luxurious yacht.

What initially appears to be a foolproof escape strategy, however, quickly spirals entirely out of control. Stranded far from shore on the high seas with nowhere to run and no allies left to trust, Iris and Daya find that their carefully calculated plot has morphed into a brutal, claustrophobic fight for their lives.

Behind the camera, “Breakwater” boasts a heavyweight roster of experienced producers. The film is produced by Kurt Wimmer, whose prolific writing and producing credits include “The Beekeeper 1 & 2,” “Law Abiding Citizen,” and “Point Break”; Jib Polhemus, whose major studio credentials feature “The Mechanic,” “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,” and “The Expendables 2”; Hannah Leader, known for her work on “Mary,” “Freud’s Last Session,” and “A Visit to Grandpa’s”; and Tad Daggerhart, who also penned the screenplay for the film, building on his previous writing credits for “Expend4bles” and “Black Lotus.” Additionally, James Ireland serves as an executive producer on the project for Dark Dreams Entertainment.

The project marks the continuation of a strong, ongoing working relationship between WestEnd Films and producer Jib Polhemus. The two entities have previously collaborated on several major titles, including the action thriller “Scorpion”—which also stars Alex Pettyfer alongside Clive Owen and is currently in post-production—as well as the upcoming feature “Zealot,” which stars Kodi Smit-McPhee and Djimon Hounsou.

On the ground in Malta, physical production will be handled and closely overseen by the Malta Film Service. Led by industry partners Jean Pierre Magro and Vadim Fortunin, the local production outfit brings a wealth of experience to the table, with past credits including “Not Without Hope,” “Hounds of War,” and “Blood on the Crown.” The Malta Film Service will manage comprehensive on-the-ground line production duties, facilitate the integration of local crew members, and expertly navigate local rebate structuring to ensure a smooth production process throughout the Mediterranean shoot.

Director Luc Walpoth shared his artistic vision for the movie, emphasizing the distinct tonal contrasts that will define the viewing experience. He noted that “Breakwater” is fundamentally a Mediterranean neo-noir thriller exploring themes of lust, greed, betrayal, and the universal human desire to escape one’s reality. According to Walpoth, setting the story against a gorgeous coastal backdrop allows the production to effectively contrast sun-drenched surface beauty with the darker, more sinister tensions lurking underneath. Visually, the director aims to construct a cinematic world that feels simultaneously sensual and deeply unsettling, steadily building from simmering, psychological suspense into a propulsive, high-stakes thriller as the characters’ plans inevitably unravel and loyalties shift on the open sea.

Maya Amsellem, the managing director of WestEnd Films, echoed the director’s enthusiasm while highlighting the commercial and creative strength of the package being brought to the marketplace. Amsellem described “Breakwater” as a genuinely gripping thriller anchored by a fantastic lead cast in Kurylenko and Pettyfer, alongside a seasoned and accomplished creative team behind the scenes. She praised Walpoth’s distinctive cinematic vision, which successfully merges the moody, atmospheric qualities of classic noir with the rapid pace and raw intensity of a contemporary thriller. Expressing excitement over reuniting with Jib Polhemus for another major venture, Amsellem confirmed that the company is eager to introduce the title to international buyers at the American Film Market.

The inclusion of “Breakwater” further expands a robust and diverse sales slate for WestEnd Films at AFM. The company’s current lineup features a wide array of high-profile projects across various genres and stages of development. Among them is the new supernatural horror film “Sketchbook,” starring Woody Norman and Billie Piper, which is scheduled to begin filming in early 2027. Also featured on WestEnd’s slate are Tim Blake Nelson’s “The Life and Deaths of Wilson Shedd,” starring Amanda Seyfried and Scoot McNairy, which is screening for buyers at AFM; “A Visit to Grandpa’s,” starring Academy Award winners Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta-Jones, which is currently in post-production; and “Margot & Rudi,” a romantic drama directed by Anthony Fabian and starring Naomi Watts, currently in the pre-production phase.

The lineup additionally highlights the aforementioned action thriller “Scorpion” starring Pettyfer and Owen in post-production; the high-concept thriller “Ignition,” starring Maisie Williams; and “Unspeakable,” a psychological horror feature directed by Corinna Faith and starring Eliza Scanlen alongside Essie Davis, which is also navigating post-production. With principal photography for “Breakwater” set to commence in the spring of 2027, the project stands out as a major tentpole on WestEnd’s comprehensive international slate.
