Insomniac Games has stepped forward to formally confirm that its newly released PlayStation 5 exclusive, Marvel’s Wolverine, contains no generative artificial intelligence assets. The clarification from the developer arrives in the wake of a wave of online speculation sparked by a series of bizarre visual anomalies discovered by players within the game world.
The controversy began when a TikTok creator operating under the handle SmoothMango shared a video detailing an unusual find while exploring the superhero title. The roughly minute-long clip focused on two distinct in-game bathroom signs that featured human figures visibly melted together in a distorted, unnatural fashion. To many viewers, the warped iconography bore a striking resemblance to the types of artifacting and malformations that audiences have increasingly learned to associate with poorly rendered generative AI imagery.
"Folks, that looks AI-generated," SmoothMango told their followers in the viral video, which quickly garnered widespread attention across various social media platforms. "I am trying to think of a way to describe this that is not AI generation because there’s no way it’s a bathroom for mutants. That looks supremely suss."
Given the current climate surrounding the rapid integration of artificial intelligence in creative industries—where consumer skepticism and anxiety over automated tools remain at an all-time high—the clip struck a nerve. The video rapidly migrated from TikTok to other platforms, including X, formerly known as Twitter, where a user named Rock Solid shared additional screenshots of the strange signage. As the images circulated, a segment of the gaming community voiced concern that Insomniac Games might have utilized controversial generative technology to accelerate the production of the highly anticipated Marvel title.
To quell the mounting speculation, James Stevenson, Insomniac’s director of community and marketing, took to social media to directly address the rumors and clarify the true nature of the visual bug. Responding to the concerns raised on X, Stevenson explained that the bizarre appearance of the bathroom signs was the result of a routine technical rendering error rather than the implementation of automated design software.

"No. This is a UV map bug and we have a fix coming," Stevenson wrote, offering reassurance to concerned fans. He followed up with an unequivocal denial regarding the studio’s development practices: "There are no AI-generated assets in Marvel’s Wolverine."
While Insomniac has not yet announced an exact release date for the upcoming patch, the developer’s swift response has largely put the generative AI rumors to rest. Even so, the incident marks just the latest hurdle for the studio’s latest project following its official global launch on September 15, 2026.
Just days prior to the bathroom sign controversy, the game faced a different wave of lighthearted and frustrated online feedback regarding Logan’s Scent Trails mechanic. Fans quickly seized upon the feature, humorously dubbing the visual effect "fart gas" across social media channels. Insomniac acted quickly to address the community reaction, deploying a minor adjustment patch to tone down the visual presentation while confirming that the studio would investigate implementing a toggle option for the tracking mechanic as post-launch development continued.
In addition to technical and visual quirks, the game’s linear storytelling framework has also sparked ongoing discussions and testing among players. Some members of the community have taken to experimenting with specific gameplay sequences—such as the title’s motorcycle segments—to test the boundaries of the game’s mechanics and player mortality under unusual conditions.
Despite encountering several bumps in the road during its initial launch window, Marvel’s Wolverine has experienced a solid commercial debut, tracking strong early sales figures despite pacing behind the record-breaking trajectory of Insomniac’s previous superhero hits like Marvel’s Spider-Man. Critical reception for the title has been mixed-to-positive, with IGN awarding the PlayStation 5 exclusive a 6/10 review. The assessment noted that while the game features strong character work and an engaging foundation, its slick and satisfying combat risks wearing thin before the conclusion, leaving the overall experience feeling merely adequate rather than revolutionary.
