Though John Wick seemingly met a definitive and tragic end on the steps of the Sacré-Cœur in John Wick: Chapter 4, Keanu Reeves is far from finished with the stylish, unstoppable assassin who revitalized modern action cinema. Even as a fifth live-action feature film remains in development under the watchful eye of franchise mastermind Chad Stahelski, the expanding criminal underworld of the High Table is set to venture into new creative territory. Lionsgate is moving forward with an animated prequel film exploring the character’s infamous origins, and Reeves has officially closed his deal to return to the role, ensuring his distinct presence and voice will anchor this next chapter in the franchise’s lore.
The upcoming animated project, greenlit by Lionsgate last April, is set to delve into the legendary event that established John Wick’s mythical status within the global underworld: the "Impossible Task." In franchise mythology, this refers to the nearly suicidal final mission John undertook on behalf of the syndicate’s former head, Viggo Tarasov, in a single night. By ruthlessly dismantling all of his employer’s formidable rivals, Wick earned his freedom from the High Table, allowing him to retire and live a quiet life with his late wife, Helen—a fateful choice that ultimately set the stage for the chaotic events of the original 2014 film.
Creative leadership for the project brings together a notable blend of animation and blockbuster pedigree. The film will be directed by Shannon Tindle, whose recent work includes helming the acclaimed Netflix animated feature Ultraman: Rising. The screenplay is being co-written by the sibling writing duo Ryan and Kaz Firpo, known for their work on Marvel Studios’ Eternals. While the creative team and voice cast are beginning to take shape, Lionsgate has not yet publicly announced which specific animation studio will handle the production duties for the feature.
An Expanding John Wick Universe
The decision to take the John Wick franchise into animation marks another major milestone in a cinematic universe that has steadily grown far beyond its modest roots. When the original, tightly wound action film debuted in 2014, it was conceived primarily as a self-contained story about a grieving widower seeking vengeance for his stolen car and a puppy left to him by his wife. Directed by Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, the film’s innovative blend of gun-fu, practical stunt work, and meticulous world-building struck a massive chord with audiences worldwide.
That initial success quickly transformed into a sprawling, multi-film phenomenon. As subsequent sequels arrived in theaters, the lore of the series expanded exponentially with each new outing, introducing intricate rules, archaic currencies, shadowy councils, and a global network of assassins bound by unbreakable blood oaths. Reeves has starred as the title character across all four mainline films, and his iconic character even crossed paths with Ana de Armas in the 2015-set spinoff film Ballerina, which was released earlier this year.
The universe’s expansion extends well beyond Reeves’ direct involvement. Action icon Donnie Yen, who captivated viewers as the blind, deadly assassin Caine in John Wick: Chapter 4, is currently leading another dedicated spinoff film centered on his character. That project recently wrapped its principal photography, signaling that Lionsgate is eager to explore the perspectives of supporting players within the syndicate’s orbit. Furthermore, the franchise successfully made the leap to television in 2023 with the three-part event series The Continental: From the World of John Wick, which traced the bloody history of the New York hotel that serves as neutral ground for the world’s most dangerous killers.
Despite the wealth of projects currently moving through various stages of production, Lionsgate has not yet announced an official release date for the upcoming John Wick animated prequel film.
