Bandai Namco’s long-running and critically acclaimed flight simulation combat franchise is set to return next month with Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve. Heading to personal computers and consoles, the latest installment promises to deliver the high-octane aerial dogfights and intricate geopolitical storytelling that fans of the series have come to expect over decades. However, before players strap into their cockpits and take to the skies in the main game, a new expansion of the franchise’s universe is arriving on screens. IGN can exclusively reveal that a live-action prequel miniseries titled Hour Zero will premiere later this month, featuring a star-studded cast that includes Lost alum Josh Holloway and Superman Returns lead Brandon Routh.
The newly announced digital series is structured into four distinct installments, with runtime lengths ranging between six and eleven minutes per episode. Hour Zero is scheduled to roll out ahead of the official launch of Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve on October 2. Fans eager to dive into the narrative background will be able to watch the episodes first on IGN.com and IGN’s official YouTube channel. The episodes will debut progressively every few days at 6:00 AM PT / 9:00 ET, setting the stage for the dramatic conflicts players will soon experience firsthand.
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve Hour Zero Episode Schedule and Narrative Setup
The official trailer for Hour Zero offers a glimpse into the high-stakes, tense atmosphere of the miniseries. Alongside Holloway and Routh, the project features Cobra Kai star Tamlyn Tomita. According to the official production description, the series centers around "three strangers who survive the opening days of the Republic of Sotoa’s invasion of the Federation of Central Usea."
Each actor embodies a distinct character caught in the crushing gears of sudden geopolitical conflict. Josh Holloway steps into the role of "a pilot with nowhere to land," capturing the isolation and desperation of a military aviator cut off from his command structure. Brandon Routh portrays "a doctor who saved his enemy," navigating the moral dilemmas and human cost of wartime triage. Meanwhile, Tamlyn Tomita takes on the character of "a news anchor silenced for telling the truth," representing the suppression of information and the collapse of societal institutions as war breaks out.
Bandai Namco has emphasized that these interwoven character arcs are designed to do more than simply entertain viewers; they actively lay the narrative groundwork for the deep and engaging campaign mode that awaits players within Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve. By exploring the human toll of the Republic of Sotoa’s invasion of the Federation of Central Usea through live-action storytelling, the developers aim to provide a richer emotional context for the airborne missions players will undertake in the game.
Josh Holloway on Returning to Gaming and Realizing a Childhood Fantasy
In an interview ahead of the miniseries premiere, Josh Holloway shared his experiences jumping into the cockpit and immersing himself in the Ace Combat universe. For Holloway, participating in the live-action project and engaging with the game material actually reignited a long-dormant passion for interactive entertainment.
"When I was younger, I was a gamer," Holloway recalled, reminiscing about classic arcade cabinets. "Ms. Pac-Man, Centipede, Galaga. I went away from gaming for many, many years, and this has gotten me addicted. It’s so real and so visceral. Layering a story onto this game really raises the stakes. After playing the game, I could feel myself in that cockpit because I got to do it in the studio. So now I have that sense memory while I’m playing the game, which is a blast."

Furthermore, Holloway noted that the project fulfilled a lifelong ambition rooted in pop culture from his youth. Long before modern CGI or advanced flight simulators existed, his imagination was captured by classic aviation media, though the realities of military service ultimately steered him toward a different career path.
"God, my first fantasy about being a fighter pilot was Baa Baa Black Sheep," Holloway said, referencing the 1970s World War II fighter pilot television series. "Remember that? That just tore my imagination up. When I was in high school, I looked into how I could become a fighter pilot. But you have to be a fricking math genius for them to let you in the hundred-million-dollar plane. That dashed my dreams of actually being a fighter pilot. But I thought, Aha, I can still be an actor. For me, being a fighter pilot is right up there with being a cowboy."
While Holloway previously appeared in the 2007 real-time strategy game Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars, he noted that he is currently less inclined to participate directly in performance capture for future video games. Instead, he expressed an interest in seeing interactive entertainment properties cross over into traditional cinematic mediums, pointing to other massive franchises with rich storytelling potential.
"I’m less interested in being a part of the video game world. Instead, I’d like to turn one of those into a movie," Holloway explained. "I feel like there’s room in the Ace Combat world to possibly make a feature. Same thing with cowboys. I do want to do that. I’ve looked at Red Dead Redemption. It’s not just a game anymore. They’re like real simulators with real stories."
Having already played through portions of Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve ahead of its public release, Holloway also offered a piece of practical advice for newcomers stepping into the pilot’s seat when the game launches. His primary tip for survival in the chaotic skies of the campaign is simple: maintain constant pressure and do not hesitate.
"Be aggressive," Holloway advised. "If I start to chill out, I got somebody locked on my tail already. So you’ve got to be like, ‘Oh my God, I’m going for it,’ and just hammer down."
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is scheduled to provide early access for Deluxe Edition holders beginning on September 29, followed by a wide release for all players on October 2. The flight combat title is currently available for preorder across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, giving fans ample time to secure their copies and catch up on the Hour Zero miniseries as it rolls out on IGN.
